Dr. King’s primary research interest is the design and analysis of large multi-center clinical trials. As the Principal Investigator of Data Coordinating Centers (DCCs), she collaborates with clinical investigators across a variety of specialties to carry out multi-center cohort studies and randomized clinical trials (RCTs).
Wendy King, PhD, joined the Cleveland Clinic in January, 2025 as Head of the Department’s Clinical Trials and Design Section. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, she was a Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh for two decades.
Her work is focused on the design, coordination and analysis of multi-center observational studies and RCTs. Currently, she is a multiple Principle Investigator of the DCC for two NIH-funded multi-center studies: 1) Percutaneous Intervention Versus Observational Trial of Arterial ductus in Lower gestational age infants (PIVOTAL), which will inform best practices in the clinical care of patent ductus arteriosus in preterm infants, thereby helping reduce chronic lung disease, intestinal injury, brain damage and congestive heart failure, and 2) the ShOrt and NOrmal sleep duration in Insomnia (SO, NO Sleep) Study, which will evaluate sleep phenotype as a predictor of response to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Trazodone, respectively, for insomnia, thereby informing personalized medicine. She has been the PI of six additional DCCs, and a co-investigator of several others.
Dr. King has studied surgical and behavioral obesity treatments most extensively; however, she enjoys collaborating with physician researchers to study a wide variety of health-related exposures and outcomes (e.g., cerebral palsy, hepatitis B-HIV co-infection, substance use disorder, vaccine hesitancy and novel biomarkers).
